심명여: 웬일이야? 너 연락도 없이. What’s the occasion? You didn’t even call.
목해원: 왜? 오면 안 되나? Why? Am I not allowed to come?
심명여: 올 일이 없는데 왔으니까 그렇지. 파이 먹을래? It’s because you have no reason to come, but you’re here. Want to eat a piece of cake?
목해원: 웬건데? Where did you get it?
심명여: 수정이가 줬어. Su Jeong gave it to me.
목해원: 렌지에 데워 먹어. 차잖아. Warm it up. It’s cold.
심명여: 네가 하던가. 뭐야? 휴가라도 낸거냐? You do it then. What’s going on? Are you taking time off or something?
목해원: 어? 나다. 뭐야? 나 여기 있는 거 몰랐어? Oh? That’s me. What? Didn’t you know I was here?
심명여: 그러게. Yeah
목해원: 여기 있으면 설거지할 때마다 보이는건데. With this here, you should have seen it every time you washed dishes.
심명여: 그러니까 휴가 낸 거냐고? 언제 까지야? 서울 언제 올라갈건데? So, are you taking a vacation? Till when? When will you return to Seoul?
목해원: 글쎄. 난 당분간 서울 올라갈 생각이 없는데. I can’t say. I don’t intend to go to Seoul for a while.
심명여: 진짜 서울 갈 생각이 없어? 엄마는? You really have no intention to go back to Seoul? What about your mom?
목해원: 근데 이모. 저 위에 게스트하우스 생겼더라? 두 개나? 그래서 우리 펜션이 이 꼴이 된 건가?Aunt. I saw the two new guesthouses up the street. Is that why our pension is in this condition?
심명여: 너 진짜 여기서 살거야? 농담이지? So are you really going to live here? You were just joking, right?
목해원: 농담 아닌데. 나 진짜 당분간 여기서 살 생각인데. I wasn’t kidding. I intend to live here for a while.
심명여: 여기서 어떻게 살겠다고? How are you going to survive here?
목해원: 이모처럼 사는 거지, 뭐. 아무렇게나. I’ll be like you. Doing whatever.
목해원: 네가 책방을 하는지 몰랐어. 이게 진짜 책방인지도 몰랐고. I didn’t know you were actually a bookseller (had a bookstore). Or that this place is actually a bookstore.
임은섭: 한3년 정도 됐어. It’s been about three years.
목해원: 헌책도 같이 팔아? Do you sell used books, too?
임은섭: 아니. No
목해원: 그럼 이건 뭐야? What’s this, then?
임은섭: 키핑해 놓은거야. 그… 여기 오는 사람들이 책을 조금씩 읽고 책갈피 꽂아놓고 가거든. 그냥 사람들이 편하게 책방을 드나들 수 있게 시도해본거야. 너도 그렇게 하던가. 보고싶은 책이 있으면. I’m just keeping them. So, some people come by to read a book, and they leave a bookmark if they can’t finish it. I just tried it so that people can visit the bookstore comfortably. You can do that too, if there’s a book you want to read.
목해원: 책방 이름은 왜 굿나잇이야? 처음 간판 봤을 때부터 궁굼했어. Why is the bookstore called Good Night? I’ve wondered ever since I saw the sign.
임은섭: 잘먹고 잘자는거. 생각 보다 어려운 일이 잖아. 다들 그 기본적인 것도 못해서 힘들어 하잖아. 그러니까. 부디 잘 먹고 잘 잤으면 하는 그런 마음에. Eating well and sleeping well is harder than it sounds. People have a hard time because they can’t even do such basic things. So, I came up with it in hopes that people will sleep and eat well.
목해원: 잘 먹고 잘 잔다… 인생이 겨우 그거 뿐인가? Sleep and eat well. Is that all there is to life?
임은섭: 그럼. 뭐가 더 있나? Then, what else is there?
